How many pages can you read in an hour?

Short answer: most adults read 30 to 40 pages of typical fiction in an hour. Raw arithmetic allows more, since 200 to 250 words per minute against pages of 250 to 300 words works out to 40 to 60 pages, but real sessions include pauses, rereads, and small interruptions that pull the practical number down.

Where 30 to 40 comes from

Average adult silent reading speed sits around 200 to 250 words per minute. A typical printed page holds 250 to 300 words. Multiply out and a perfectly steady hour covers 40 to 60 pages.

Nobody reads a perfectly steady hour. You pause at chapter breaks, glance up, reread a sentence, and drift for a minute here and there. Those small losses take a real bite, which is why experienced readers budget 30 to 40 pages per hour for ordinary fiction and are rarely disappointed.

Ranges by material

The material moves the number far more than most people expect.

Easy, dialogue-heavy fiction: 40 to 60 pages. Thrillers, romance, middle-grade. Dialogue pages hold far fewer words, so pages fly by even at a normal word rate.

Typical adult fiction and readable nonfiction: 30 to 40 pages. The standard planning number for most novels, memoirs, and popular history.

Dense nonfiction: 20 to 30 pages. Serious history, science writing, business books with real content. You pause to absorb, and the pauses count.

Technical and academic material: 10 to 25 pages. Textbooks, papers, philosophy. Stopping to think is the point, so a low page rate here signals engagement rather than a problem.

Anything with note-taking: 5 to 15 pages. Studying roughly halves whatever rate you would otherwise have.

How to measure your own rate

The test takes 20 minutes and beats any table, including the one above.

Take the book you actually plan to read. Put your phone in another room, set a timer for 20 minutes, and read normally, with no attempt to race. When the timer goes off, count pages covered, including fractions, and multiply by three. That is your pages-per-hour rate for this book.

Two refinements make it more honest. First, run the test twice on different days and average the results, since energy levels swing the number. Second, redo it for every new book. A rate measured on a paperback thriller tells you very little about the hardcover history on your nightstand.

Once you have the rate, planning is plain division. A 320-page book at 32 pages per hour is 10 hours, which at 40 minutes a day is about two weeks.

Why the book matters more than the reader

People worry about being slow readers, but among adults who read regularly, the spread between readers on the same book is usually smaller than the spread for one reader across different books. The same person might cover 55 pages an hour of a crime novel and 15 pages an hour of a philosophy text the same week. Word count per page, sentence complexity, and how often the text asks you to stop and think all change with the book. Your eyes and vocabulary do not change between Tuesday and Wednesday.

The practical consequence: if your page rate feels low, check the book before blaming yourself. Tiredness and a phone within reach are the other usual suspects. A low rate on a dense book you chose to read carefully is the system working.

One more honest note. A high page rate is only a means. Covering 50 pages an hour of a book you retain nothing from saves no time at all, because reading you cannot remember has to be done again or written off.

Common questions

Is 20 pages an hour slow?

For dense nonfiction, a textbook, or anything you are taking notes on, 20 pages an hour is normal. For light fiction it is on the slow side of average, which usually points at tiredness, distraction, or a book you are pushing through rather than enjoying. Check your rate on an easy book before deciding you are a slow reader.

How many pages can you read in 30 minutes?

About 15 to 20 pages of typical fiction, at the common rate of 30 to 40 pages per hour. Dense material runs closer to 8 to 12 pages in 30 minutes. Short daily half hours add up: 15 pages a day finishes a 300-page book in 20 days.

How many pages is 1 hour of reading a textbook?

Usually 10 to 25 pages, and closer to 5 to 15 if you are highlighting and taking notes. Textbook pages are large, dense, and full of material you are meant to stop and absorb. Budget textbook reading by the hour, not by the chapter.

How many pages per hour is considered fast?

Sustaining 50 to 60 pages an hour on ordinary fiction with full comprehension is fast, roughly 250 to 300 words per minute on full pages. Higher figures usually mean light pages with lots of dialogue, or skimming. Speed on one book says little about speed on the next.

How do I calculate my reading speed in pages per hour?

Read the actual book for 20 minutes without your phone nearby, count the pages you covered including partial pages, and multiply by three. Repeat on a different day and average the two. Redo the test for each new book, since page density changes the number more than anything else.
